Our History

Founded in January 2024, Rogue Trans emerged from the vision and commitment of Maeve and a small group of dedicated advocates working to support transgender, non-binary, and gender-diverse communities. Recognizing the significant barriers these communities often face, the initial focus was to develop a comprehensive resource list highlighting local businesses and healthcare providers known for affirming, inclusive policies and practices.

What began as a grassroots effort quickly grew into something much larger.

Through ongoing conversations with community members, it became clear that access to resources—while essential—was only part of what was needed. There was also a strong desire for connection, affirmation, and belonging. In response, the initiative expanded beyond the resource list to include plans for a community group designed to foster support, build relationships, and strengthen advocacy among transgender, non-binary, and gender-diverse individuals, as well as their allies.

With determination and care, Rogue Trans formally launched its group and began organizing events to raise awareness and provide meaningful support. Each gathering became a space to share experiences, exchange knowledge, and cultivate a stronger support network grounded in individuality and inclusion. These events also created opportunities for learning and dialogue, helping to reduce stigma and deepen understanding across the wider community.

A major milestone: The Free Closet—dignity, affirmation, and immediate relief

As Rogue Trans listened and responded to community needs, one theme surfaced again and again: daily life is shaped not only by whether services exist, but whether people can access them safely and affordably. For many transgender and gender-diverse people, the cost of building a wardrobe that aligns with their identity can be a significant and ongoing barrier—especially during transition, when clothing is not simply about style, but about safety, self-recognition, and being seen.

In response, Rogue Trans opened the Free Closet, a gender-affirming clothing and accessories program offered at no cost. The Free Closet exists to remove a practical burden while restoring something deeper: the confidence that comes from being able to present authentically. It is intentionally designed as a welcoming, low-barrier space where community members are met with respect, kindness, and care—without interrogation, without judgment, and without conditions.

From grassroots to sustained support: evolving from events to infrastructure

What began with a resource list and informal gatherings continued to mature into a broader support ecosystem. Rogue Trans strengthened its ability to connect people not only to affirming businesses and providers, but also to one another—reducing isolation and helping individuals build supportive relationships that protect wellbeing over time.

As participation grew, the need for consistency became increasingly clear: a predictable place to gather, access resources, and build community—something stable enough to outlast the limitations of borrowed spaces and periodic events. This shift reflects a common challenge in rural regions: when support is fragmented, the burden stays on individuals to find what they need; when support is coordinated, communities can begin to thrive.

Establishing a permanent home: the Rogue Trans Center in Ashland

To meet that need for stability and visibility, Rogue Trans took a significant step forward in 2026 by opening the Rogue Trans Center in Ashland. The Center represents the organization’s commitment to sustainable, place-based support—anchoring core services like the Free Closet and creating a reliable hub for connection, resource navigation, and community-building.

This permanent home strengthens Rogue Trans’ ability to offer consistent programming, deepen partnerships, and provide a safer, more accessible pathway into support—particularly for individuals who are newly out, navigating transition, or seeking community for the first time.

Strengthening impact through partnerships and a connected web of care

From the beginning, Rogue Trans has approached impact as a collective effort. As the organization has grown, it has worked to build relationships with local healthcare providers, mental health organizations, educational institutions, and advocacy partners—expanding the network of affirming support available across the region.

These partnerships are essential to long-term outcomes. They increase access to gender-affirming medical care, mental health resources, and practical assistance, while also supporting broader community education that reduces stigma and strengthens safety for transgender and gender-diverse people.

Where we are today

Rogue Trans continues to grow from its founding purpose: ensuring transgender, non-binary, and gender-diverse people have access to affirming resources and a community where they belong. Guided by listening, shaped by local need, and sustained by compassion, the organization has evolved from a grassroots resource list into a stable community anchor—combining practical supports with belonging-centered programming that helps people move from surviving to thriving.

At its heart, Rogue Trans is built on a simple belief: when people have what they need—and are surrounded by a community that says “you matter here”—their lives expand with possibility.
